Amazon Prep From China: FNSKU, Polybags and Carton Labels
Amazon does not refuse a shipment for arriving late. It refuses it for a barcode.

Prep is the least interesting part of an Amazon supply chain and one of the most reliable places to lose a fortnight. Almost all of it is decidable before the goods leave the factory, and almost all of the expensive versions happen because it was decided after.
Three labels, three different jobs
The unit label identifies the item to the fulfilment network. Amazon’s own identifier and the manufacturer’s barcode are alternative approaches with different consequences for how your stock is stored and whether it is pooled with other sellers’. That is a decision to take deliberately, not one to leave to whichever the factory finds easier to print.
The bag. Poly-bagged goods above a certain size need a suffocation warning, the bag needs to be sealed and transparent enough for the contents to be identified, and the unit label must remain scannable through it.
The carton. Shipment labels, box content information and weight and dimension limits. Cartons over the limit are refused or surcharged, and the limit is a physical constraint the factory can design the pack-out around — if asked before the cartons are printed.
At source or after arrival
Prepping at the factory means the goods arrive ready and you pay for the work at Chinese labour rates. It also means an error is replicated across the entire shipment before anyone sees it, and correcting it happens after an ocean crossing.
Prepping after arrival costs more per unit and catches errors while they are still cheap. The per-unit comparison is a separate page; the point here is that the decision is about error cost, not only labour cost.
The step that resolves most of it: send the factory a physical prepped sample, or photographs of one, and have them return photographs of the first finished carton before the run completes. Nearly every prep failure we see is a specification that was described in words when it could have been shown in a picture.
Requirements move — check them, do not inherit them
Amazon’s prep and packaging requirements change, they differ by marketplace, and they differ by category. Anything on this page — or on any other page you found by searching — is a description of the shape of the problem, not a current specification.
Read the requirements in Seller Central for your marketplace and category before each new product, and do not carry last year’s pack-out into a new line because it worked before. This page was last checked on 10 September 2026 and deliberately states no thresholds, because a threshold quoted here would be wrong eventually and there would be no way for you to tell when.
Common questions
Most can, and many do it well. What they cannot do is verify the labels are right for your account and marketplace — that is on you, and it is worth checking one physical unit rather than approving a print file.
Per unit, usually. Whether it is cheaper overall depends on the cost of an error crossing an ocean before it is found, which is why a prepped sample approved in advance is the cheapest insurance in this whole process.
